Gilbert and Sullivan feast at Artscape on 1 July Date:

23 June 2006 The Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra have put together a mouth-watering feast of music and song, which will be performed at the Artscape Theatre on Saturday, 1 July 2006, at 8pm. The proceeds of the evening will go to The South African Red Cross Society, to support their efforts to assist the most vulnerable communities of the Western Cape.

“We are delighted to be a part of this event,” said Mike Tainton, Acting Secretary General. “We are looking forward to a long and fruitful partnership with the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society.”

The programme includes a staged concert version of the very popular Savoy opera, Trial by Jury, along with excerpts from Ruddigore and the Mikado. It is presented under the banner of the Artscape Audience Development and Education Department – Winter Showcase.

The cast of Trial by Jury includes: Sian Atterbury as the jilted plaintiff, Angelina and Chad Findlay fills the role of the two-timing defendant, Edwin. The proceedings are presided over by the eccentric judge (Clifford James), the Usher (Ian Kirkwood), the Counsel for the Plaintiff (Niel Roux) and the Foreman (Peter Kramer). Other singers performing in the concert are: Julie Harris, Lance Kotze, Cyndy Nixon, Leonard O’Connell, Karen Wilson-Harris and Ryta Zmuro, who will be supported by a full chorus.

Alastair Cockburn (who is also the chorus master) will conduct the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the concert will be staged and directed by Teddy Davies. Heather Earp-Jones will coordinate the Trial principal costumes.

It promises to be an evening of music and laughter, so please support the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society and The South African Red Cross Society. Tickets cost R55 / R75 each and may be purchased from Computicket and Dial-a-Seat (021) 421 7695.
