Haiti earthquake: South African Red Cross launches emergency appeal
Pretoria – The South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) , a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, is today launching a R30m emergency appeal in support of international efforts to assist those affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

Mining giant Anglo American has donated R1million Rands in aid of the Soweto flood survivors. The freak floods left 2 dead , 3 missing and over two hundred families homeless. Standard Bank makes a R3 million donation
To assist those affected by the violence, Standard Bank will make a R3 million donation to the South African Red Cross, to be used to feed 10 000 people who are currently being accommodated in 20 camps across the country.

Funds needed for victims of xenophobic attacks
As a result of increasing attacks on foreign nationals, the South African Red Cross Society calls on South Africans to stand “Together for Humanity”. Based on the humanitarian organisation’s belief in the power and strength of acting together to protect human dignity, the South African Red Cross Society is launching an appeal for R1,000,000 (one million rands) for the provision of emergency relief to those affected by the violence and to launch an anti-discrimination campaign.

The Red Cross big five marathon & half marathon

World Aids Day
The Coastal Branch held its World Aids Day celebrations on the 29th of November 2007. The event was attended by members of the community, volunteer caregivers, OVC, clients, Branch committee members, facilitators and staff. The branch was extremely blessed to have representatives from the National Youth Peer Educators Revision workshop also in attendance.

Humanity in Action
During a First Aid Training course in Ladysmith, it was brought to the attention of the SA Red Cross Society that a family of two, a brother and a sister, were unemployed and had to eat cow dung wrapped in leaves to have food in their stomachs.

Flood Disasters in Greyton 2007
Between 20 and 26 November 2007 310mm rain fell in the wider Greyton/Genadendal area.
2005 total rainfall for Greyton was 502mm to put this in perspective. Thus 2/3 of the average total rainfall fell in just 3 ½ days.
