Red Cross to launch an OVC /AIDS advocacy campaign
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in southern Africa along with the South African Red Cross Society will be launching an Orphans and other children made vulnerable by AIDS (OVC) campaign in Johannesburg at the Indaba Hotel on the 15th of June 2005.
Realizing that in the ten countries where they work there are already 4,132,000 children who have already lost their parents to AIDS and many millions more who are made vulnerable by the disease, the International Federation and the National Red Cross Societies decided that it is necessary to massively scale up their support for these children.
The advocacy campaign seeks to engage the media, humanitarian agencies, private sector, governments and children themselves in highlighting the many problems which Orphans and other children made vulnerable by AIDS and the support which they require from all sectors of society. This campaign will form part of the events leading up to the Day of the African Child.
