Tsunami appeal raised over R30 million - thank you South Africa!

The members of the board, management and staff of the South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) wishes to thank the South African public and the media for opening their hearts to the plight of their fellowmen in Southeast Asia and East Africa after the unprecedented devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami of 26 December 2004.

A total of R30 million was donated into the SARCS Absa Bank Account during the appeal period from 28th December 2004 to 31 March 2005 with more than 47 tonnes of goods in-kind contributed to the global relief effort.  Though the critical and dramatic phase of disaster relief has passed, the affected countries now face the challenge of putting their devastated lives together once more and rebuilding communities – “the outpouring of support from South Africans will go a long, long way in the rebuilding process” said Leslie Mondo, Secretary General of SARCS.

The 8th May was World Red Cross Day and it is fitting that thanks are extended from the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies and in particular the 33 national societies who have been working unstintingly to alleviate the suffering and restoring human dignity to some 700 000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Somalia, the Maldives and other affected countries.

Co-partners of the Tsunami Appeal included: Netcare 911, Pick ‘n Pay, ABSA Bank and SABC.

Ms Mandisa Kalako-Williams, President of SARCS, a voluntary position, was seconded by her employer, Spoornet, to the Department of Provincial and Local Government disaster management team for a four month period to assist with international liaison and relief aid requests.  She said “We therefore thank you all on behalf of the people whose lives were shattered for demonstrating concern and humanity.  We hope that we can count on your continued support for the strengthening of disaster preparedness and management in South Africa”.

Notes to Editors:  The appreciation campaign will commence from 6th May to 18th May 2005
